Electorates in a queue

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The deputy District Commissioner Orapeleng Modimoopelo has expressed the need for the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Judiciary to agree on a procedure to handle election matters referred to courts of law.

Speaking during the party liaison committee meeting on Tuesday, Modimoopelo said the procedures of lodging electoral protests differ between the two entities. He said this results in some electorates failing to meet registration deadlines while authorities are still caught up between the two differing procedures. He cited some protests that were lodged by election officers to the magistrate court and were rejected on the basis that those who registered the case were not the rightful complainants. He said the procedure with IEC is that protests are lodged with them and they are the ones referring them to court.

Modimoopelo said that preparations for the 2019 general elections have already started. He said the coming elections would not come as a surprise as all the necessary groundwork would have been done. He said similar stakeholder meetings are necessary to ensure that all preparations are done.
