Former Permanent Secretary to the President (PSP), Carter Morupisi, says he has no regrets but only condemns how his case was handled by the Court of Appeal (CoA).
This morning, the CoA bench overturned a High Court decision that set aside an earlier apex court’s seven-year sentence meted against the former top civil servant. The judgment, read out by Justice Isaac Lesetedi, maintained that according to the hierarchy of the Administration of Justice, the CoA is the highest court in the land. Hence it stated that the High Court, as a subordinate court, cannot overturn its decision. In an interview with Mmegi Online following the judgment, Morupisi maintained his innocence.
The former PSP, now a convict, still maintains the “truth will come out”. The truth, which he says he will expose after his custodial sentence. As he said goodbye to his family for the last time as a free man, at least for the next seven years, Morupisi said he did not regret bringing an appeal forward. He had earlier only received a fine and a suspended custodial sentence. “I don’t regret the appeal, because had I had a fair court it would have seen things differently,” he said in an interview. “But with our system here, it has political influence. I know what I have done other than the things I have been framed to have done. “My freedom is very important. It doesn’t matter how many years you put me in prison. The fact of the matter is the truth will come out, and it will exonerate me and prove I was wrongfully convicted,” Morupisi added.
