'I Am' campaign launched to students

American Ambassador to Botswana Michelle Gavin says self-development and leadership training among youth is critical in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic which continues to threaten the existence of future leaders.

Speaking at the 'I Am' campaign launch on Tuesday at Ledumang Secondary School, Gavin stressed the importance of reaching out to youth, in order to inspire them to think about what they can contribute to the country. She explained that the 'I Am' campaign, which has been introduced in schools under the Do It Yourself (DIY) Organisation, will provide valuable mentorship and leadership training to young people. The campaign is intended to assist participants establish their life purpose and help them take first steps in the journey of learning, achieving and sharing in their chosen profession or discipline. It also aims to empower students with knowledge, and raise awareness on social ills like HIV/AIDS, alcohol and drug abuse. The campaign has already been implemented in four schools around Gaborone and will soon develop to rural areas. The DIY Organisation uses the 'Life is a Journey' curriculum, with segmented sessions covering self-discovery, role modelling as well as community mapping and outreach.

For his part, project coordinator Game 'Zeus' Bantsi said students should acknowledge that challenges are part and parcel of life and instead equip themselves with skills and knowledge that will help them face difficult circumstances. He pointed out that DIY places great emphasis on self-discovery and discipline, explaining that individuals can make the choice to avoid risky and negative behaviour patterns.
