FRANCISTOWN: Medical doctor Habaudi Hobona will represent the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) in the parliamentary by-election in Francistown-West that is scheduled for 23 November.

The former Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital superintendent garnered 568 votes, Lazarus Tlou 400, while Baathodi Monyatsi had a paltry 90 votes.  There were 13 spoiled votes in the BCP primaries in which 5,700 voters had been expected to take part but only 1,071 did.

Hobona will now tussle it out with the pint-sized but outspoken Monarch South councillor Ignatius Moswaane of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and Shatiso Tambula of the Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) in the by-election. The Francistown-West by-election, which was occasioned by the death of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) Tshelang Masisi nearly two months ago, will be Hobona's second attempt since the 2009 general elections.  Her first attempt was late in 2010 when she lost against Fidelis Molao of the BDP in Tonota North. The 2010 by-election was necessitated by the death of incumbent MP Balidzi Gaolathe.
