The ministry of finance and development planning on Friday granted the education ministry the sum of P5 million to address food shortages in secondary schools.

The amount is part of the Contingencies Fund that was issued early this year subsequent to a crippling food shortage in secondary schools. Finance minister, Kenneth Matambo told the just ended winter Parliament that the supplementary budget request forwarded by the ministry of education was used to meet a shortfall in the food account of the department of secondary education.

Due to the department’s exhausted food account, in March, President Ian Khama issued a warrant of expenditure out of the emergency fund as informed by the Public Finance Management Act of 2011. At the time several secondary schools around the country were facing food shortages.
