Govt ponders use of drones to combat poaching

As the government moves to increase its militarised effort to stamp out poaching by acquiring drones from the US, debate reveals dismal failure of the unmanned flying killer machines.

South African writer and filmmaker, Adam Welz, has always held position that aspects of the battle to save Africa’s wildlife must include improving justice systems and reducing consumer demand for wildlife products, especially in Vietnam where ground-up rhino horns are touted as a cure for hangovers, cancer and other ailments, and where rising incomes have made the horns accessible to more people and their possession a status symbol. 

Reports show that in 2011, the South African National Defence Force deployed two companies of troops – 265 men – in and around a park to help with the fight.
