Govt can't afford commuter train

The passenger train will not return soon because government cannot afford to run it. Infrastructure Minister Nonofo Molefhi on Friday told a tourism gathering at Boipuso Hall that a new locomotive costs over P25 million and refurbishment of one wagon would set the government back P7 million.

Molefhi said the only way for the passenger train to return would be if Botswana Railways secured lucrative long-term contracts for the transportation of goods.

He said currently Botswana Railways is banking on the new BCL strategy that seeks to transport uranium and other minerals.
