President Ian Khama is not the first president to have an airstrip built for him using taxpayers' money, the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Mokgweetsi Masisi has said.

All the other former presidents have had airstrips built for them. The founding President Sir Seretse Khama was built an airstrip at his farm in Tuli Block, Sir Ketumile Masire had three airstrips built for him in Ghanzi, Sekoma and Kanye where he had farms, while Festus Mogae had a helipad constructed for him on public land in Palapye, Masisi told Parliament on Friday. While the Mosu airfield will be the only one constructed for Khama, Masisi said he was unaware of the number of helipads constructed for the President.

He said these were part of what they were entitled to as presidents. Masisi was enlightening Parliament about the circumstances in which the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) is constructing an airfield adjacent to Khama's Mosu residence.
