If latest media-government interactions are anything to go by, it may not be long before private media in Botswana is barred from covering government functions and meetings.

In the latest incidents, this past Monday, Sipho Madisa, President Ian Khama's private secretary barred the MidWeek Sun newspaper from covering a meeting between the president and England's Prince Harry. On the same day the Gaborone City Council issued an invitee to the media to cover the council's proceedings, but declared in the same invite that  "ONLY government media will be allowed" when President Khama addresses the Council.

Recently journalists from the private media were asked to leave Francistown council chambers when the president arrived to address the councillors. Only government media was allowed to sit in. Meanwhile some government departments would not entertain questions from the media as officers have been instructed "not to speak with the private media".
