Global warming affects local cereals production

Cereal production has decreased by 19 percent as the effects of global warming take its toll on Botswana, says Thabang Botshoma, deputy director of Meteorological Services.

In an interview with Mmegi this week, Botshoma said that recent assessment of commonly grown crops, which are maize and sorghum has shown a 30 percent decrease in yield as temperatures increase and rainfall declines.

Botshoma said as climate change brings in more stress on the water sector, it poses a big threat given the relationship between rainfall, rangelands, agriculture, wildlife and climate variability.
