Gaborone councillors have criticised the mayor, Haskins Nkaigwa, for including the installation of streetlights in the Central Business District (CBD) in the 2014-2015 budget and allocating road maintenance jobs to undeserving contractors.

Councillors Rupert Hambira, Ndiwaani Kenosi and Tshepo Moloko led the onslaught against the mayor’s announcement that P12.9 has been raised for the CBD streetlights and that two contractors are patching up the rain-damaged Gaborone roads.

Hambira dismissed claims by the mayor that CBD lighting project would cover 14km. He said the distance is outrageous because the area is not that big. He questioned why the council made the mall a priority when there are many urgent projects pending. He said the CBD is largely private owned so the council should not make it a priority when there are other areas that need services and development. “The owners must install streetlights (in CBD).
