Fresh faces take over at BR

Less than seven days after departure of the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Botswana Railways (BR), Dominic Ntwaagae, a new boss has taken over on an acting basis.

Stephen Makuke, who has worked as BR’s director of business development, takes over with immediate effect and in his company is a fresh board of directors, following the recent axing of the old. Yesterday, authoritative sources told Mmegi that besides Makuke, the new board was chaired by Adolph Hirschfeld and also comprised Kabelo Motswagole, Christopher Mokgware, Elijah Motshedi, Barulaganye Gakelebotse, Hilda Mocuminyane and Isaac Moepeng. The board has been appointed with immediate effect.

Transport and Communications minister, Kitso Mokaila’s plan to clean up the railway parastatal also includes the reinstatement of three senior employees who were suspended in 2016. Director of Operations, Justice Ramontsho as well as Safety, Health and Environment and Quality manager, Emmanuel Mahosi and Mokhurutse Mokhurutse, Legal Corporate manager were reportedly suspended by the previous board. Mokaila was not in a mood to share details on the latest developments at BR when contacted for comment yesterday. “I don’t do Whatsapp interviews boss. I am in Barcelona (Spain),” he said. However, Mmegi is reliably informed that an investigation by the minister has unearthed serious issues at BR, which are said to have been the main cause of friction between the previous board and the former CEO Ntwaagae. The former CEO left under a cloud of mystery just one month before the end of his contract. Ntwaagae has since officially bid farewell to BR employees. “As most of you are aware by now, my employ with Botswana Railways has come to an end after 27 years of service. This was by mutual agreement with the appointing authority,” he said in an internal announcement.
