FRANCISTOWN: A serving stocktheft convict was on Friday sentenced to 40 years in jail after being found guilty on four counts of rape. But, effectively Serenyatseng Garetshele will actually serve only a quarter of the time.

When sentencing him, Principal Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu ruled the sentences to run concurrently, meaning that the convict will serve an effective 10 years only. Garetshele committed the offences between 2013 and 2014 at Lekobeng cattle post near Matsitama in the Central District.

Mulalu said rape cases were prevalent in his jurisdiction, which called for the courts to pass stiffer sentences as a deterrent against others who may aspire to commit similar offences in future. In a similar matter, an alleged serial rapist has been denied bail because he did not state if there were changes in circumstances that warranted the court to grant him bail.
