This week’s suspension of beef exports to the European Union (EU) and its trading partners is expected to have overbearing effects on farmers in Zone 11. Zone 11, one of the veterinary disease control zones, consists of the Southern, Kgatleng, South East and Kweneng districts.

The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) suspended beef exports to the EU and trading partners after a buffalo was seen, shot and killed at Moreane crush in Letlhakane East, near Kanye. Buffaloes are carriers of foot and mouth disease. The department also banned the movement of cloven-hoofed animals and their products into, out of and within Zone 11, as well as slaughtering.

The Lobatse abattoir of the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC), located in Zone 11, ceased slaughter. Public relations and communications manager Brian Dioka said the BMC also stopped buying cattle.
