The nation bid a heartfelt farewell to Dr Gaositwe Chiepe, a distinguished educator, diplomat, and politician as she was laid in her final resting place over the weekend at Phakalane Phomolong Cemetry.

The funeral service was attended by President Duma Boko as it had been communicated and former president Mokgweetsi Masisi was amongst other dignitaries who reflected on the profound impact Chiepe had on Botswana's development. Chiepe, who passed away peacefully at her home in Gaborone on January 26 at the age of 102, was celebrated for her numerous pioneering achievements. She was the first woman in Botswana to earn herself a coveted college degree and eventually a postgraduate degree, breaking stereotypes in education and public service. Her illustrious career included roles as Botswana's first director of education, High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Nigeria and various ministerial positions including in the ministries of Education, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry amongst others.

These milestones in her illustrious career earned her the now well-known nickname of 'Woman of Many Firsts', a description acknowledging that she broke barriers. During the service, speakers highlighted Chiepe as a phenomenal being who left an indelible mark on Botswana's development and wished that more people be inspired to be just like her or even better. Boko described Chiepe as an outstanding leader emphasising her contributions to Botswana's growth and her role as a trailblazer for women in leadership. He seized the moment to remind people that to move forward with the development of the country everyone should help where they can. "We really need each other, we need each other desperately to develop this country. It can't be left to the UDC or the BDP only," Boko highlighted.

Former president, Masisi, also paid tribute to Chiepe, noting her impeccable service and the legacy she leaves behind as the woman of many firsts. Botswana Democratic Party's (BDP) secretary-general, Dr Lemogang Kwape further highlighted that indeed Chiepe was a woman of a kind who matches how people described her and alluded that she should be honoured back in her home village where she was born and raised. Kwape tasked the new government to rename the Serowe College of Education after the late Dr Chiepe who was a pioneer in the education sector amongst other sectors. The decision to not make Chiepe's burial a state funeral was noted as the Office of the President had communicated. Nonetheless, the government assisted the family emphasising its support with Boko's attendance to underscore the high esteem in which she was held, which the state media broadcast live. Chiepe's legacy as a woman of many firsts serves as an enduring inspiration as her life's work in education, diplomacy, and politics has left an indelible mark on Botswana. She will be remembered as a phenomenal being who dedicated her life to the service of her country. Fare thee well Dr Chiepe.

UDC's 100 Days: Please deliver your promises!

We duly congratulate them to have ousted the long ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) from power. Prior to taking power from the BDP, the coalition had made several election promises that are credited for influencing change and swaying the people to vote in its favour. The party had made an undertaking, which its leader and President Duma Boko consistently bellowed in his campaign trail. These undertakings were promises that Batswana would be...
