Due to prolonged high temperatures, it is highly likely that the country will experience strong winds and thunderstorms, a climatologist has said. "The atmosphere accumulates a lot of energy from these high temperatures.

"This leads to formation of violent storms, which are usually accompanied by strong winds," Othata Mmolotsi from the Department of Meteorological Services told Mmegi yesterday after strong winds caused destruction in Tlokweng, Gaborone, Mmopane, Ramotswa and other areas on Sunday.

Advertising boards, power poles and other infrastructure were damaged by the relatively strong winds that swept across some parts of the country over the weekend. The winds were accompanied by thundershowers in some areas.
