Ex-FNB employees trial postponed

Two former First National Bank (FNB) employees implicated in a case of money laundering at the bank are yet to know their fate.

The duo appeared before Extension Two magistrate Joy Brown yesterday for continuation of trial which has been ongoing since 2011. The trial was however postponed to a later date due to the absenteeism of state prosecutor, Calistus Mosarwana who apologised for his failure to be in court due to other legal commitments before him. The two accused persons Batshegi Gare and Clement Khumo are charged with defrauding FNB of close to P36,000. Both Gare and Khumo are charged with four counts of stealing by servant contrary to Section 275 of the Penal Code of Botswana.According to the charge sheet, the two accused persons on or about different dates of December 2010 at or near Gaborone acting together and whilst in the employ of FNB stole the money being the property of their employer, which came into their possession by virtue of their employment.

The money was stolen on different occasions and on all counts from one to four the two accused on December 7th, 2010 allegedly stole P15,950, on December 15th  stole P2,450, on December 21st, P11,990 and on the 29th of the same month stole P5,450 - amounts which total P35,840. Both accused who are without legal representation have pleaded not guilty. All the key witnesses in the case have testified but the investigating officer requested by the two accused is yet to appear in court for cross examination as he has reportedly resigned from his job.  The case was adjourned to January 28th, 2013.
