FRANCISTOWN: Chief Magistrate Gaedupe Makgatho is worried by the prevalence of unlawful possession of elephant tusks cases. Passing sentence on Tuesday in a case in which two Zimbabwean men, Admire Gwishiri and Gift Ndlovu, were found guilty of unlawfully possession of 10 elephant tusks, Makgatho said the sentences imposed by the courts should be a deterrence.

“I sentence each of the accused to 18 months in jail and I also fine each of the accused P7,000 which is payable to the court with immediate effect.

The sentences shall commence from February 12 when the accused were first incarcerated. The forfeited tusks shall be returned to the police for proper disposal,” said Makgatho.
