'Economy mirrors quality of education'

African examinations assessment authorities have been urged to thrive for quality assessment because they determine the quality of the workforce.

Officially opening the 30th conference of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) at GICC yesterday, Professor Richard Tabulawa said the health of economies was measured by its education status and assessment. "The health of the economy is measured by the health of the education being provided," Tabulawa, who is the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Botswana, said.

In turn, he said, assessment measured both the health of the education system as a whole and that of the economy.  He noted that the link between assessment reform and economic development was a crucial and obvious one. The conference is themed Reforms in Education Assessment for Regional Development.  Tabulawa said international assessment tests had evolved as global scripts that had set the tone for education reforms globally, resulting in a standardised model of education that every country wanted to comply with.  He observed that this had made it possible for educationalists and policy makers from different countries to come together to share experiences.
