Following the decline of their popular vote in the 2014 general elections, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) special congress has resolved to hold primary elections earlier than usual. According to the party secretary general Botsalo Ntuane, the congress has resolved to hold primaries for the 2019 general elections in all opposition held constituencies mid next year.

“All candidates in all constituencies and wards held by the opposition parties should submit their names by end of June 2017, by October we will have our candidates ready,” he said.

Ntuane further said for the 39 constituencies held by the BDP, the primaries will be held a year later.
