PALAPYE: The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Moiseraele Goya says drug and alcohol abuse in schools is driving down learner performance at examinations.

Speaking during the Captive Eye Organisation (CEO) awareness campaign in Palapye recently, Goya said substance abuse was interfering with students’ learning, while also making it difficult for those in management to run the schools.

“Headmasters and teachers spend a lot of time trying to bring children to order, advising them about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse rather than pushing the syllabus.  Actually there is no way they can ignore such topics because more students would fail,” said Goya.
