DRTS laments passenger laxity

The Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) has lamented that passengers' failure to report malpractices by taxi drivers makes it difficult to enforce regulations in the sector.

"The challenge we have is that people will be treated unfairly and will not report to our enforcement division, but action has been taken against perpetrators based on the few reports that we receive," DRTS public relations officer Amos Motshegwe told Mmegi. He said they are mandated to charge anyone who does not comply with the permit conditions as long as a report has been made that a taxi operator has violated regulations.

He said that though DRTS regulations require taxi operators to drop passengers at their door-steps or gates, they are aware that some drivers leave passengers at bus stops or where the tar road ends. He stressed that they cannot charge taxi operators who go against the law when no complaint has been made.
