Develop human capital-Ambassador McGovern

Botswana has been urged once again to diversify her economy through developing human capital, as the recent global economic crisis has shown the vulnerability of the country owing to dependence on a single source of wealth.

Speaking at the Gaborone International Conference Centre (GICC) yesterday during the European Day celebration, the head of the delegation of the European Union (EU) to Botswana, Ambassador Gerard McGovern said while in the past educational infrastructure development was the priority, it is today crucial to re-balance the paradigm with a focus on what goes on inside the learning facility. He announced that the EU will continue supporting Botswana in education and skills development with more focus on system reforms.  "Today our support is focused on system reforms, teacher training, access for minorities and those with special needs, the development of a national qualification and certification, and last but not least, a human resource plan for Botswana," he said.

McGovern added that the education system has to adapt to the needs of the economy.  For her part, the PS in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), Grace Muzila said the EU has helped in the development of human resources since 1981.  "The provision of a globally competitive human resource has always dominated EU's assistance to Botswana," she said.
