Demystify mathematics and science - Rakhudu

The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), Keletso Rakhudu has said that the dismal performance of students in mathematics and science subjects is a concern, as it frustrates government's plans to increase the pool of professionals in that area.

Rakhudu said the country is currently engaged in major projects that require expertise in the field. He said this yesterday at the opening of a mathematics and science teaching workshop held at Oodi College of Applied Arts and Technology in Oodi. The MoESD is partnering with the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and the Australian National University for the workshop.

Rakhudu said the two subjects are drivers of future development as Botswana moves from reliance on mineral wealth to a knowledge based economy. During the last five years, the country has experienced a downward trend in learning achievement in these subjects. "Therefore, mathematics and science are not only the business of schools and the Ministry of Education but a concern for the entire future of this country," he said.
