De Beers 'relocation: Local businesses miss the boat

Local businesses appear set to miss the flood of business opportunities associated with De Beers' P50 billion relocation of its global sales from London to Botswana, Mmetla Masire, Coordinator of Relocation and Opportunities at the Diamond Hub, has said.

As part of a 2011 sales and marketing agreement, De Beers and government agreed to relocate the company’s international aggregation, sales and marketing activities to Botswana.

 The relocation, which on Monday brings De Beers’ rough diamond sales to Gaborone, offers opportunities for local businesses to provide ancillary and general outsourcing services such as security, transportation, catering and other professional services.
