From time immemorial, Batswana have been a close knit society that helped the less privileged through various interventions. These forms of cooperation acted as formal interventions and an engine of economic growth that transformed the lives of many. As Botswana prepares to celebrate the International Day of Co-operatives, popularly referred to as CoopsDay, Mmegi Correspondent, LEBOGANG MOSIKARE, writes that the meaningful contribution of cooperatives to the country’s economy cannot be overemphasised

FRANCISTOWN: Botswana’s cooperative movement comprises consumer cooperatives, agricultural marketing and supplies cooperatives, savings and credit cooperatives, producer cooperatives and thrift and loan cooperatives.

Cooperatives had and continue to help Batswana in various ways.

Gov't, unions must find common ground

The situation is exacerbated by the ruling party’s admission that some of its most important election promises remain unfulfilled. This is not the change many Batswana had expected. The UDC was elected into power on a strong promise to improve lives, create jobs, protect workers and repair public services.
