Convicted baby killer appeals 15-year term

A 32-year old woman of Sefophe wants the Court of Appeal to quash her 15-year jail term for the murder of her two-months old because she was convicted on the basis of suspicion rather than facts.

However, after Atamelang Lesole was charged with a single count of murder in 2007, she was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after pleading guilty and agreeing with the summary of facts.

Lesole who was 26 at the time of the alleged offence on 7 June 2007, was being reprimanded for having allegedly left her baby alone to go on a drinking spree when she replied: "Ke taa soka golo moo ga lona molala ga swa ("I will strangle this creature of yours to death)." The baby was subsequently certified dead on arrival at Selibe-Phikwe Government Hospital.
