Colleges of education demoralised by autonomy delays

Lecturers at government colleges of education have instructed the Trainers and Allied Workers Union (TAWU) to petition the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) over delays in granting autonomy to the institutions.

TAWU president Allen Keitseng told The Monitor that the process of granting autonomy to colleges of education is taking too long and causing anxiety. He said the lecturers feel that lack of autonomy has adversely affected infrastructural development, curriculum reviews and staff welfare. As a result, productivity is compromised, which reduces efficiency and the quality of graduates.

Keitseng said the MoESD agreed to grant autonomy to the colleges as recommended by the De Villiers report. The process is being driven by the Tertiary Education Council (TEC).
