Climate change not taken seriously - MP

The chairman of the climate change committee and Member of Parliament for Francistown South Wynter Mmolotsi has decried the lack of local political commitment and seriousness towards climate change.

Speaking in an interview with Mmegi this week, Mmolotsi emphasised the importance and seriousness of the effects of climate change on Botswana noting that it remains one of the serious threats to the survival of people in Africa after HIV/AIDS.

He said while climate change is influenced by major human activities, mainly in developed western countries through the exploitation and burning of fossil fuels, it also has a negative impact on the African continent.Mmolotsi was speaking ahead of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting to be held in Durban next month.  He said the former parliamentary body on the issue had a broad mandate and lacked capacity hence it did not reach out to the public.  He added that they are not even sure as yet whether the committee will be able to attend the Durban meeting.
