FRANCISTOWN: Chobe District is facing a serious shortage of land for human settlement, a land official has said. Chobe Landboard (CLB) secretary, Stanley Mokotedi said at a media briefing in Francistown yesterday that the situation is so dire that no arable ploughing fields were allocated in the 2013-2014 financial year.

“As of March 2014, CLB has managed to survey all the plots in the built-up areas in all the eight villages of the district excluding the arable ploughing fields,” he said.

“The scarcity of human settlements in the Chobe District calls for efficient and effective use of land to allow for sustainable socio-economic development,” he explained. Mokotedi said that about 24% of the land in Chobe is reserved for human settlements. The Chobe National Park and six forest reserves are in the district. Mokotedi said the district is 22,559 square kilometers in size with the national park taking the lion’s share of 10,590 square kilometers while the forest reserves cover 4,198 square kilometres. He said the forests and park occupy 74% of the total land in the district.
