BPC to hike price next month

The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is hiking electricity tariff next month, April 1, as broke government look up to the public to partly finance the cost of national electrification. That translates into a P30 monthly increase for households who normally part with P182.00 a month on average.

Add to that  the new 12 percent VAT charges to take effect from April 1, 2010, as well as the high possibility of BPC's revised tariffs, then the electricity consumer is set to be hit three times in the pockets by the electricity bill come next month.

Government says  it has no funds to carry out its plan to set up a flat P5, 000 electricity connection fee for anyone anywhere in the country, and has decided the tax-payer instead will make that dream come true thanks to the latest hike, which will come in the form of a levy to all electricity consumers next month.
