The Minister of Transport and Communication, Frank Ramsden, has said that an improved transportation system will benefit the country's economy.

Ramsden was addressing a press conference that was meant to discuss the newly formulated Integrated Transport Policy (ITP) draft aimed at improving the transportation system in the country.

The minister said that because of Botswana's geographical location, the country has become a transit route to many neighbouring states. He said that freight trucks from different countries use and damage Botswana's roads and at the end of the day his ministry is expected to maintain them. Ramsden said his ministry alone could not come up with long-term solutions to the transportation problem in the country, hence the need to engage various stakeholders. He said the ITP suggests that the private sector be the one responsible for road maintenance through a system whereby road users would be expected to pay a road levy.
