Botswana seeks P861m under SADC drought appeal

Botswana has submitted a request for donor funding of $83 million (P861 million) through the recently launched SADC Humanitarian Appeal, as officials say the severity of the crisis left by El-Nino is too great for government coffers.

Botswana and South Africa were absent from the list of 10 countries in need last month, when President Ian Khama – as SADC chair – launched the $2.4 billion appeal for international relief.

The absence was read as a sign that Botswana would self-finance its drought relief efforts, as it has traditionally done.
