Botswana, Japan patent new rice genes

Botswana may not be a rice growing economy but the country hopes to soon reap multi-million Dollars from newly discovered rice and maize genes that could be in demand world wide if efforts to commercialise the gene by Japan are successful.

Botswana’s Department of Agricultural Research has registered an innovation or invention with the Patent Cooperation Treaty with the Japan NARA Institute of Science and Technology.

The invention involves the use of genes from Botswana’s wild watermelons that have been found to have properties that enhance the growth of roots and the biomass on certain types of crops such as rice and mealies.

The Projects Magazine today launched The Future of Mining Summit, set to become the country’s premier mining conference. The event is scheduled for 12th and 13th of June 2024, at Boipuso Hall, Fairgrounds in Gaborone.
