Botswana suspected as early as last week that the Zimbabwean army would force President Robert Mugabe to relinquish power after he sacked his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa, highly placed intelligence sources tell Mmegi.

Top ranking security chiefs in Botswana claim that they received intelligence reports from Harare to the effect that ‘Mugabe’s days in power are numbered.’ This was after Mugabe relieved Mnangagwa of his position as Zimbabwe Vice President of with immediate effect.

“Mugabe has lost his faculties and he blundered by firing Mnangagwa. Our intelligence sources informed us that the army chiefs were not pleased with the sacking of the Vice President and would not allow Mugabe’s wife [Grace] to do as she pleases. The army commanders knew very well that after the purging of the Vice President, they were next,” said one the high-ranking security chief. Although it appears the Zimbabwe army has everything under control, Botswana security chiefs feels that “things are not looking good”. They were behind the travel advisory issued on Tuesday by the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation. Members of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security, Botswana Defence Force and Botswana Police Service have also been deployed to border villages to beef up the security.
