BOSETU rejects proposed eight-hour work day

The secretary general of the Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU), Tobokani Rari has said the Ministry of Education and Skills Development's (MoESD) proposal that teachers carry out teaching duties until 3.30pm and engage in extra-curricular activities afterwards until 4.30pm, is not a practical solution to the problem of hours of work.

He said applying the eight-hour work day, which applies to the entire public sector, to teachers is a huge mistake that has affected education delivery negatively.  Addressing the media in Gaborone on Wednesday, Rari said the current hours of work were not ideal for a school system. He argued that the arrangement has degraded the quality of teaching and learning.

"Eight hours are not enough to be divided among teaching and non-teaching duties, and it is impossible for students to come out of class and immediately go for extra-curricular activities," he said.
