Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU) over the weekend resolved that a recent 3% salary hike by government should be viewed as a just a bonus by the employer ahead of any Public Service Bargaining Council (PSBC) negotiations.

BOPEU leadership met in Jwaneng over the weekend including all its 15 regional leadership, trustees, and the NAB. According to BOPEU General Secretary Topius Marenga, the leadership resolved that the 3% salary increase is just a bonus and that after the wrangles between BOPEU and BOFEPUSU, the bargaining council which does not exist now, will be reconstituted to discuss among others the salary increase. “Our leadership came to this conclusion after they were briefed about the status of the bargaining council.

“ They are saying, we should not challenge government’s recent stance, and that government understand very well the functions of the PSBC since that structure was established by government.” Meanwhile the newly elected chairperson of BOPEU’s largest region, Mothusi Mojela told the Monitor that all the regions resolved at the Jwaneng meeting to defend their President Andrew Motsamai from attacks by rival organisations. “ We have taken a resolution that we have to stand and defend our President from the attacks; he is our chief spokesperson and driver of our collective decisions, and we are awake to the fact that our rivals have unleashed attacks against the Union, targeting our President as its head, and we are ready to defend the organisation and our President against such attacks”, Mojela told the Monitor.
