Boko sworn in as President

At exactly 5.35pm, November 1st 2024, Duma Boko took an Oath of Office of the President to became the sixth leader of Botswana.

The small swearing in ceremony, conducted by the Chief Justice Terence Rannowane at the Gaborone High Court chambers was witnessed by few government officials, pastors, close family members and media.

This comes after Boko, leader of the opposition coalition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) was declared winner of the October 30, General Elections earlier in the day.

In a televised address Justice Rannowane declared Boko as the winner just after 2:pm.

“I congratulate him proudly for the confidence the voters had placed on him and thereby declare Advocate Duma Boko as President,” Rannowane said.

UDC has won 36 seats in Parliament followed by Botswana Congress Party (BCP) with 15, while Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) and Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) managed five and four seats, respectively. Former BDP member Edwin Dikoloti won a seat as an Independent candidate.

Who is Boko?

Advocate Duma Gideon Boko is a human rights lawyer and a politician. He is President of the Botswana National Front (BNF) and UDC. He holds an LLB from the University of Botswana, LLM from Harvard University and a Diploma in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law from Lund University.

He has taught at the University of Botswana specialising in Constitutional law. During his student days at the University of Botswana he served in a number of leadership roles including being the Student Representative Council President. He has led The Law Society of Botswana, Botswana Network of Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) as a Chairperson.
