BMC working hard to meet deadline

The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) is working hard to meet a September deadline of resuming beef exports to the European Union (EU) after inspectors from the lucrative market slapped an embargo on the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) for failing to meet EU quality standards, especially stringent hygiene norms.

Speaking at the official opening of the second annual National Agriculture Show (NAS) on Wednesday, the Minister of Agriculture, Christiaan de Graaff, said Botswana was on the right track to that end.

Regarding the foot and mouth scourge that was also a factor in the embargo on BMC, de Graaff said his ministry had both short-term and long-term strategies to combat the disease and ensure it did not recur. "My ministry has entered into a bilateral collaborative trans-boundary control of FMD (agreement) with Zimbabwe," he stated.
