Blame game puts students' future in jeopardy

The blame game between the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) and Lobatse Senior Secondary School science department has put the future of 11 students in jeopardy.

The school and the BEC have disagreed over what caused the late release of the students' double science results in the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE). All the students failed the science subject with BEC saying that the school did not submit the course work marks. But the school has countered that it submitted everything to BEC, which is to blame for losing some of the course mark files. The double science grades for the 11 students were not released when the BGCSE results were announced three months ago.

When BEC finally released the results, the poor performance raised eyebrows. It is understood, the school authorities were amazed weeks after the BGSCE results were released when BEC called to inquire about missing students course marks. The school is still at a loss how BEC graded the students if the files are missing.
