Beef measles costs BMC P73million

The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) is grappling with a record high of beef measles exceeding 10 percent, which together with plant related problems has led to a P73 million loss this year.

Attributed to the prevailing drought in the country and poor sanitation standards, its prevalence shot higher than the "normal" 10 percent to reach heights of 15 to 19 percent between June and July this year.

Authorities at the beef capital in Lobatse on Monday said this was a business threat as the market could start reacting to the shortfalls of communal cattle rearing that exposes cattle to the parasite that breeds measles.
