BDP finally goes to court over Moswaane nomination

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has finally served its own member, Whyte Marobela, and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) with court papers.

The BDP wants the court to order the IEC to receive its nomination papers to allow its candidate, Ignatius Moswaane, to contest the Francistown West by-election. In its latest application, the BDP does not address Justice Motswagole’s order, which barred Moswaane from contesting the by-election, saying the Central Committee should hear Marobela’s appeal.  By Thursday, the papers were not yet filed at court.

The BDP maintains that the IEC erred by refusing to accept Moswaane’s name for nomination after the BDP Central Committee had listened to Marobela’s case and came up with a resolution as per the court’s requirement. The BDP intends to have the matter heard at least on Monday. It however seems that the IEC would not be ready as the commission’s  Secretary General Gabriel Seeletso is not in the country.
