Batswana women to summit Mount Kilimanjaro

A group of Batswana women referred to as TeamBW 2021 aims to summit the highest mountain in Africa, the mighty Kilimanjaro from September 22, to October 3, 2021 in  a quest to raise awareness about rape and mental health.

In an interview with the event coordinator, Keletso Gareebine, said the two main objectives of their mission were to raise awareness to the effects of rape on the mental heath of survivors and to ensure access to counseling services for boys and girls aged between 12 to 19 years who are grappling with mental health challenges due to rape.

“At a tender age of 13 years old I was raped by my uncle, an ordeal that I had to deal with from that time until now as an adult, wife, mother and a career woman. From an early age, I struggled and bottled up the ordeal and in process suffered from low self-esteem and resentment towards my extended family. I started getting assistance while at university from counseling services offered by the university clinic,” she said.
