Yesterday, Gaborone Regional Magistrate, Barnabas Nyamadzabo, broke the hearts of multitudes of Bakgatla who thronged the Village Magistrates Court when he sent their Kgosikgolo Kgafela Kgafela, his brother Mmusi, deputy chief, Bana Sekai and 11 tribesmen to jail. The remand is to act as a deterrent for the men's continued illegal floggings of people in Kgatleng, pending trial.

Kgafela II, a trained lawyer, is together with his co-accused facing multiple counts of human rights' violations in which they allegedly flogged some individuals in Kgatleng without affording them a hearing.

As tears flowed unabated, and agony plastered the faces of the Bakgatla tribesmen and women, defence attorney, Unity Dow, tried to prevent the humiliating situation of seeing their Kgosikgolo spending two weeks in jail, to no avail. The prosecution had successfully made its case, said Nyamadzabo.  He also highlighted the fact that the prosecution had long warned that they would approach the courts seeking a restraining order against the accused if they continued with the floggings, but they did not stop.
