Adequate supply of safe blood a challenge - Seakgosing

The Minister of Health, John Seakgosing, says adequate supply of safe blood and blood products is a great challenge faced in the health-care sector world-wide.

Speaking at the annual commemoration of World Blood Donor day, Seakgosing said the shortage of blood supply remains a challenge that needs to be addressed because inadequate supply of blood can lead to high mortality rates across the globe, with Botswana being no exception. He pointed out that blood transfusions help to save thousands of lives every year in the county, helping patients who have been in road accidents, for example, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential life saving role in maternal and pre-natal care.

However, he stressed that adequate and supply of safe blood and blood products can only be achieved through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors who are always willing to give blood without asking for anything in return.Held under the theme 'Blood Saves Lives, Safe Blood Starts With Me', the June 14 event marks an annual commemoration that highlights the need for regular blood donation. The theme focuses on the need to provide sufficient blood supply by promoting a substantial increase in the number of safe blood, voluntary-non-remunerated blood donors who give blood on a regular basis.
