Since 2008, 62 people have died at the hands of security organs, the minister of Defence, Justice and Security Shaw Kgathi told Parliament Tuesday. Kgathi said the security organs involved include the Botswana Police Service (BPS), the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS), the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and the Prisons Service.

This means that each year at least seven people die at the hands of law enforcement agents. He stated that although it is regrettable, the rate of violent crimes and use of weapons in the commission of crimes such as armed robberies and poaching is increasing.

He said this has put the lives of law enforcement officers at risk in their interventions against these crimes, which in some cases result in the use of firearms and deaths. “Therefore since 2008, 62 people, were at the time of their deaths in the hands of law enforcement officers or in violent interaction with law enforcement officers in serious crime incidences such as armed robberies or escapes in the case of Prisons department, as well as suicides while in police custody,” said Kgathi.
