3000 Teachers on study leave

An acute shortage of teachers awaits the already troubled education sector as teachers go for further studies en masse this year.

The Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) has acknowledged that there will be a nationwide problem, as 3,000 teachers will upgrade their qualifications at local institutions and within the SADC region.

Primary school education will bear the brunt because a majority of professionals at this level hold Primary Teachers Certificate (PTC) and Diplomas, thus the need to upgrade qualifications. In an interview, Oarabile Phefo, the MoESD spokesperson, said these large numbers are a result of the 2008 decision to stop civil servants from going for further studies due to financial constraints.
