Botswana is experiencing its worst drought with meteorologists saying it is the worst dry-spell the country has had in 34 years. The Southern African landlocked country is suffering from impacts of climate change with constrained agricultural production, increasing food insecurity and increasing water stress, which will worsen with time, as projected.

In July 2015, Parliament approved P445.1 million in emergency funding following President Ian Khama’s declaration of the whole country as drought stricken. The P445 million was 0.89 percent of the overall budget. The overall budget for 2015/16 financial year was around P49.63 billion.

In June 2015, Khama declared drought for the 2014/15 season following the Drought and Household Food Security Outlook conducted in March and April 2015. The assessment highlighted a significant decline in the rainfall distribution in the country. The assessment also indicated a decline in rainfall distribution coupled with a scorching heat wave resulting in low hectare tillage.
