The inaugural Next Big Electronic Dance Music (EDM) DJ auditions brought a variety of talent from upcoming disc jockeys who battled it out at Chez Nicolas on Saturday.
The auditions attracted more than 40 aspiring EDM DJs who battled it out on the decks with the aim of being the better disc jockey and qualify for the top 10, then sail to the finals where there is prize money of P20,000.
Most of the contesting DJs were young men with some familiar faces who are already playing at parties and as resident DJs at different nightspots of Gaborone. They were given 10 minutes each on the decks to show what they are capable of doing. They displayed different skills and character on the decks.
The contestants used different mixing techniques on the decks such as, effects and mixing while for some it was a daunting task as they failed the transition from one track to another. Mixing EDM requires one to have some moving energy which most of the DJs lacked, however there are some who impressed.
The contestants were judged by a panel of music and DJing experts who are DJ Fauz, German Dollar, Lu- Anne Alexander and DJ Izzy who gave out their respective opinions and advice on what the various contestants needed to improve. DJ Izzy was the most objective, when giving feedback. Some of the contestants were even told that: “We have a lot of people auditioning, trying out their luck, it’s a great vibe. The judges are looking for creativity, transition, engagement with the crowd and other criteria. For those contesting in the second instalment should bring their A game and impress the judges and we might change the set of judges,” said Drew Chadhall the head of Next Big EDM DJ project.
The second instalment of the auditions is scheduled for February at Chez Nicolas. The date for the grand finale of the Next Big EDM DJ is yet to be announced.
