This follows a picture of the two that was posted on Chombo’s official Facebook page recently. The controversial picture has sparked social media debate about the pair’s relationship status with many in the public sphere suggesting that the two are an item.
“We cannot at this time comment on the nature of a relationship if any between Miss Botswana and Nijel Amos. As with any celebrity, influencer, or person of public interest, one may want to take a picture with another if they believe the moment they have shared is worth capturing,” Miss Botswana 2022 PR and Communications manager, Tshepiso Solomon said.
In a response to Arts & Culture, Solomon stated that the queen is allowed to post content of her own as long as it does not go against the crown.
“We are very much involved in the discussions of what may or may not go up at any given time on her private social media platforms. Lesego is not required to inform the organisation first before posting on her personal pages. However, in the instance that a post is questionable and does not align with the organisation's policies, brand, and vision for her reign the organisation reserves the right to ask her to alter or take down the post to avoid any damage that may be caused by its publicity,” she explained.
She stated that a majority of the queen’s social media interactions are discussed beforehand if the need arises.
Solomon said every reigning queen is entitled to their personal and private life with the inclusion of romantic and social relationships they develop before or during their reign, with Chombo being no exception.
She said how these relationships are conducted (privately or publicly) is also left to the reigning queen and her judgement so long as they do not interfere with her duties or go against the organisation's policies, brand, and vision for her reign.
Amos is currently serving suspension after testing positive for a banned substance.
Meanwhile, Solomon said preparations for the Miss World competition are going well. Miss World is set to be held in April 2023, on a day and venue yet to be confirmed.
The organisers are also yet to confirm when the Mobstar voting will be opened to the public.
“We will be putting out an official end-of-year statement with the inclusion of Miss World preparations within it. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to putting our queen in the forefront of the nation with your assistance as the public, media, and stakeholders of her wellbeing,” she said.
